Since the Peace Corps first partnered with the Government of Togo in 1962, over 3,000 Volunteers have served in Togo. The current education sector program, Targeting English Education for Change (TEECh), was co-designed with the Togolese Ministry of Education (MoE) to strengthen English language learning in middle schools. In alignment with the vision of the Togolese MoE, TEECh Volunteers work with middle school students, teachers and community members to support English language acquisition.
TEECh Volunteers’ Work Involves
Supporting Student Achievement: Increasing students’ achievement in English language skills in a formal classroom setting by co-teaching a minimum of eight hours per week. This requires co-planning lessons with a Togolese English teacher counterpart, using materials from the MoE. Volunteers and their counterparts co-organize and co-facilitate extracurricular activities, such as English clubs, that strengthen student English acquisition competencies.
Building Teachers’ Capacity: Providing Togolese English Teachers the opportunity to practice their English skills with a native speaker. This also involves co-organizing club activities alongside a Togolese English Teacher work partner.
Engaging the Community: Building strong relationships with community members and co-organizing activities that involve the community in supporting students’ access to education. This involves understanding their needs, gaining their trust, and working collaboratively to address educational challenges.
Mobilizing Resources: Connecting Togolese teachers to resources, both on- and off-line, on English language and pedagogy. Volunteers create platforms and channels that permit knowledge exchange and sharing of resources between teachers.

By fostering a strong MRE culture, we ensure that our collaborative efforts with the Togolese government yield meaningful results and drive sustainable change. This commitment to continuous improvement and accountability maximizes the impact of Volunteers’ work with their counterparts and contributes to building relationships that make a lasting generational impact.
