Peace Corps Guyana’s Health project aims to support Guyana’s National Adolescent Health Programme to improve adolescent health and well-being. The project dovetails with the Ministry of Health’s vision that “All people of Guyana are among the healthiest in the Caribbean and the Americas.” It further aligns with the Ministry’s strategy to build health literacy as well as positive attitudes and behaviors that will lead to healthy life choices and sustain a healthy lifestyle.
Adolescent Health Promoters work in a secondary/Junior High schools 5 days per week for the first three months modeling creative teaching techniques for their co-teacher. After the third month, volunteers will act in a guiding capacity, working with fellow teachers to assist them in creating lessons that are exciting and creative and continually monitor their usage of these techniques. Additionally, you will be tasked with conducting professional development sessions for teachers, working with the PTA to share strategies for working with their children and working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health to develop and monitor school health clubs. At the 3-month mark, you will receive training to assist and ensure Health Centers are compliant with the eight standards for Adolescent Health Services Delivery. You will accordingly, transition to a 3-day work week at the school and a 2-day work week at the local healthcare facility attached to your secondary school.

- Collaborate with teachers to co-plan lessons and co-deliver the Ministry of Education’s Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) life-skills curriculum https://education.gov.gy/web2/index.php/or/health-and-family-life-education-hfle to adolescents 10 – 14 years old
- Conduct professional development sessions with staff at your secondary school
- Work with school staff and other work partners to co-develop and co-lead activities for youth in afterschool clubs and summer camps
- Partner with teachers, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and/or healthcare workers to co-facilitate sessions with parents on strategies for communicating with youth
- Enhance the ability of healthcare workers to provide youth-friendly health services
- Work with healthcare counterparts to increase awareness and access to services for Guyanese youth
- Using Participatory Analysis for Community Assessment (PACA) tools to integrate and work with community members to identify secondary projects.
- Through Project Design and Management training create grant proposals for school/community-based projects.

- Ministry of Health’s Adolescent Health and school support Unit, National AIDS Programme Secretariat, and Regional Health Departments

Required Skills
Qualified candidates will have an expressed interest in working in the health sector and one or more of the following criteria:
- Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in any field
- 5 years' professional work experience
