Activity/project background

Institute of Development Management (IDM) in Eswatini delivers education, research, training, and consultancy services to contribute impactful knowledge and skills, locally and globally. IDM offers a variety of programs that have a local, regional, and global reach, unique and relevant to respond to the needs of their customers.

The Public Health Management (PHM) Department seeks to mobilize resources to procure equipment that will be used in the delivery of the Occupational Hygiene Short Courses, an ongoing initiative that is supported by the Peace Corps. The aim of the Occupational Hygiene Shorts Courses is to impart knowledge and skills required to effectively apply principles and procedures under varying work environments to ensure safe and healthy working conditions. The courses will expose learners to practical and experiential learning to create a well-rounded and balanced workforce. This initiative supports the government of Eswatini’s sustainable development goals for spot-on health services.

The Virtual Service Pilot Participant (VSPP) will collaborate with the PHM team to develop a resource mobilization strategy and plan for implementing quality, well-balanced occupational hygiene professional short courses.

The organization has previously collaborated with the Peace Corps. They understand that the role of a VSPP is very different than a two-year Volunteer.

Engagement and tasks

The VSPP will engage in the following tasks, in collaboration with their Host Country Partners:

  • Co-identify and research potential funding sources, including grants, donors, and corporate sponsors
  • Co-train committee members to develop a fundraising strategy, write compelling grant proposals and funding requests that are tailored to specific donors or organizations
  • Co-train the committee on how to maintain accurate records of donations, grants, and donor interactions
  • Share best practices for compliance with relevant regulations, organizational fundraising, and financial management policies
  • Co-prepare reports on fundraising performance and financial status for internal and external stakeholders, ensuring transparency and accountability
  • Meet with the resource mobilization committee at least once a month

VSPPs are expected to engage on the tasks listed above for an estimated 5-15 hours per week. This engagement is estimated to be 8 hours per week.

Online collaboration will generally occur between 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Eswatini time. Specific times will be determined during orientation.

The Host Country Counterpart will have access to Zoom, email, WhatsApp, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams for regular communication and collaboration.

Per the Child Protection Code of Conduct, when engaging online with minors (0-18), two adults must be present.

Optional Additional Activities

The Peace Corps mission is to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals:

  • To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
  • To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
  • To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

Goal 1 will be achieved through the VSPP's engagement and completion of the above tasks. The counterpart and VSPP may also choose to identify an activity that aligns with Goal 2. Additionally, the VSPP may identify a Goal 3 activity to implement during their engagement. See recommendations and tools for Goal 3 activities.
