Duration
12 months
ELIGIBILITY: Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be a U.S. citizen.
Project description
The Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf (CCCD) in Jamaica has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as an Agriculture Specialist. CCCD provides the Deaf with an accessible education and authentic community through the operation of three residential schools and one Deaf village. The Jamaica Deaf Village has access to approximately thirty to forty acres of prime arable lands but due to various limitations, only about five acres of land are currently being utilized for small-scale farming – reflecting an underutilization of resources.
The PCRV will collaborate with Campus Managers and Social Enterprise Officers to strategize, plan, and execute initiatives to increase the volume, availability, and accessibility of water on Knockpatrick campus by repairing and constructing water catchment and storage facilities; establish, improve, and increase open field and greenhouse irrigation and fertigation capabilities; and improve and increase climate resilient agriculture and production. The PCRV will also work with CCCD staff to increase the technical competencies, productive capacity, and response capabilities of Deaf farm workers, Deaf adults and Deaf youth in Climate Resilient Agriculture. The overall goal of the assignment is to support the CCCD agriculture projects to improve climate change resilience, agricultural productivity, income generation, and human capital development by providing sustainable mitigation and adaptation strategies, skills training, and enterprise development.
Please note that departure dates and other details of this project could change as a result of partner needs or other external factors. Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Jamaica together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
Required Skills
Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture or related discipline.
2-5 years’ experience working in agriculture as farm supervisor and/or manager.
