Project description

The Grenada Ministry of Education through the Special Education Unit has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as a Special Education Teacher Trainer. The Special Education Unit is responsible for providing educational services to children and young persons with additional learning needs. Students, ages 3 – 21, receive compulsory special education through the various special education institutions as well as through the many mainstream schools across the country.

Within the past school years, approximately five hundred (500) students were identified as “at risk” for academic failure based on observations and formal assessments. This situation has been exacerbated due to learning loss caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some Of These Identifiable Needs Relating To SPED Include

Speech and language delays and disorders (inclusive of communication challenges related to suspected cases of Autism Spectrum Disorder -ASD).

Literacy difficulties characterized by reading levels two to three levels below expectations

Numeracy difficulties with students performing below regional averages

Behavior challenges which include bullying aggression, anxiety, trauma etc.

The Unit has six officers who are responsible for training and supporting teachers in Special Education. The support of the Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) is requested to engage these three officers, in addition to teachers, in training regarding classroom strategies and instruction, curriculum review/modification, collecting and tracking developmental data for identified children with special needs; and any other needs identified from an analysis to be conducted with the help of the PCRV.

The PCRV will be part of a team that includes the Deputy Chief Education Officer, SEN Officers, District Education Officer and Early Childhood Officer. The team will be responsible for coordination activities and monitoring the implementation of any strategies and action resulting from training and/or workshops. There is an opportunity for collaboration with other PCRVs in this project.
