Project description
The Ministry of Education and National Reconciliation - Curriculum Development Unit in Saint Vincent & The Grenadines has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as a Math Support Teacher Trainer. Over the years, concerns have been raised about the low numeracy rates throughout schools in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The Ministry of Education (MOE) has responded in several ways - provision of higher education and on-going professional development training for classroom practitioners in Math education; appointment of Math coordinators; implementation of the Math block teaching method as the main strategy for lesson delivery; and providing appropriate resource materials. The Ministry of Education also conducted several training sessions on various components of the math curriculum which focused on raising the Math performance levels in Grades K-4.
The volcanic eruption in 2021 and the experience of COVID-19 have created a learning loss in students. In response, the MOE had to quickly embark on the Education Recovery Program which aims to improve teaching of Math in schools. The Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) will be part of a team of Education officers developing a plan to equip teachers and school administrators with the knowledge, skills and strategies needed to teach math including blended learning. The PCRV will also collaborate in the development of a training plan to address the collection and analysis of student assessment data and progress records and their application in instruction. A cohort of at least five (5) Grade K-4 and five (5) grades 5 - 8 teachers will be trained over the designated period. To the extent possible, the PCRV will assist the Unit in designing professional development workshops for teachers based on the plans developed above.
Required Skills
BA/BS in Science/STEM field OR BA/BS in relevant field (e.g. education) with certification or significant relevant experience in STEM
2 or more years of relevant teaching experience.
2 or more years of specialized experience in one of the following areas:
Math, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Biology, Earth Sciences or Art
At least 5 years’ experience in teaching mathematics, numeracy and related field.
