Activity/project background

In a large community near Kyiv, there is an organization dedicated to creating a modern Ukraine by increasing the self-confidence of citizens and their direct participation in the life of the community and the country. This analytical center supports communities in Kyiv region and other regions affected by war. The organization’s team is actively working to develop and implement recovery programs and is actively attracting investments and other forms of financing, while focusing on advance digital solutions for effective public administration.

The organization supports NGO leaders and public officials affected by the war. Their frequent participation in various international events has exposed gaps in adequate English language proficiency required for successful communication with partners and donors. This deficiency impedes effective attraction of investments for recovery and reconstruction. Thus, there is an urgent need for business English skill development to advance their work.

The organization is seeking the support of one Virtual Service Pilot Participant (VSPP) to co-teach Business English for 10–15 municipal and NGO employees who wish to collaborate more closely with international partners and utilize English language resources more effectively. Specifically, the virtual engagement will focus on equipping the organization staff with useful business English etiquette on the topics of networking, professional emails, presentations, customer service, negotiations, following up, time management and cultural views of time, building rapport, excelling in international business, and communicating in a virtual world.

The organization has not previously collaborated with the Peace Corps. They understand that the role of a VSPP is very different than a Peace Corps Volunteer or Peace Corps Response Volunteer.

Engagement and tasks

The VSPP will engage in the following tasks, in collaboration with their host country partners:

  • Co-assess the English skill level of club members
  • Co-develop an English course curriculum that would focus on such topics as networking, professional emails, presentations, customer service, negotiations, time management and cultural views of time, building rapport, etc.
  • Co-plan up to 25 virtual sessions which incorporate engaging activities and intercultural learning
  • Co-facilitate one online 60-minute English club session per week
  • Provide feedback for club members to support their English language development

VSPPs are expected to engage on the tasks listed above for an estimated 5–15 hours per week. This engagement is estimated to be 5 hours per week including preparation.

Online collaboration will generally occur twice a week between 3:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m., Ukraine time on weekdays, each session lasting for about an hour. Specific times will be determined during orientation.

The Host Country Counterpart will have access to email, Zoom, and WhatsApp for regular communication and collaboration.

Per the Child Protection Code of Conduct, when engaging online with minors (0–18), two adults must be present.

Optional Additional Activities

The Peace Corps mission is to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals:

  • To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
  • To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
  • To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

Goal 1 will be achieved through the VSPP's engagement and completion of the above tasks. The counterpart and VSPP may also choose to identify an activity that aligns with Goal 2. Additionally, the VSPP may identify a Goal 3 activity to implement during their engagement. See recommendations and tools for Goal 3 activities.
