About The Project
Communities in Cameroon are looking for educators to help boost English proficiency skills and girls’ participation in science education.
In Cameroon secondary schools, girls are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), accounting for only 36% of STEM students. This underrepresentation is compounded by higher dropout rates for girls—reaching 65% nationally and up to 80% in rural areas—driven by factors such as early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and parental preference to educate boys when resources are limited. As the system is transitioning from teacher-centered instruction to student-centered learning, many teachers face capacity gaps and lack the digital literacy needed to effectively integrate digital resources in the classroom—an important enhancement given the current lack of textbooks and instructional materials.
As a Middle and High School English Teacher you will work alongside Cameroonian school teachers to implement student-centered learning and experiential activities that improve English language learning, STEM participation for girls, and teacher instructional capacity. Together, you will develop the students’ problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities, putting them on a successful path towards more academic and professional opportunities.
Activities
How you and the community will make an impact together:
Conduct community needs assessments to identify school, student, teacher, and community needs.
Develop teaching materials that align with the national curriculum.
Teach engaging English, math, or science lessons for grades 6–9.
Provide remedial tutoring for students to reach their full potential in English, math, and science.
Lead extracurricular clubs and activities, such as girls’ clubs, reading clubs, or school events.
Support teacher training sessions on life skills and digital literacy.
You may also work on secondary projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as tree planting projects and life skills camps.
